Musical Directors’ Forum & Leadership Workshop to Meet at Same Time

As previously announced, this year’s Musical Directors’ Forum & the Leadership Workshop will be held in conjunction with each other during the weekend of June 24 & 25.  Both groups will meet on Friday and Saturday, June 24 & 25, 2011.  This will allow for a reduction in travel expense in that the Musical Directors will be able to travel together with chorus leaders.  Participants last year felt that it is important for the leaders and Musical Directors to have the opportunity to have more joint sessions similar to last year’s:  “Musical Directors and Chorus Leaders Can Work Together To Better Their Choruses.”

Invitations will be sent to each of our Musical Directors and our chorus leadership once the agendas have been finalized.  Please submit potential topics to Tim Pecsenye (see below).  The three singing societies of St. Louis: the Deutscher Männerchor, the Kulturverein Ladies Chorus and the Liederkranz Chorus, will host both the Forum and Leadership Workshop.  Housing and the meetings for both the Forum and Leadership Workshop will be held at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel, 9801 Natural Bridge Road, St. Louis, Mo. The motel is close to the airport and interstates and offers free shuttle service to and from the airport. NASB Third Vice-President Richard McGinty and Loesje Chandler of Indianapolis will be co-moderators of the Musical Directors’ Forum.  Blondine Klimach and Tim Pecsenye will again serve as co-moderators of the Leadership Workshop.  Both sessions are again intended to be an exchange of ideas, and develop some action plans to help make our choruses better.

The weekend will begin with both groups meeting at a working lunch on Friday with sessions in the afternoon and socializing during the evening hours.   Saturday’s schedule makes it possible for everyone to be on their way home by mid-to-late afternoon.

If you attended last year’s Forum or Workshop, come back ready to discuss any first hand examples of impacts to your chorus; if you can’t attend, ask another member of your chorus to attend!

Many interesting attractions in St. Louis include the Gateway Arch on the riverfront which is over 600 feet tall, The Missouri Botanical Gardens also known as Shaw's Garden, the St. Louis History Museum, the Old Courthouse where the famed Dred Scott trial was held and the Old Cathedral next to it.  Also there is the Cathedral Bacilica of St. Louis which houses the world's largest collection of Mosaic Art.  Just 6 miles west of the motel, across the Missouri River, is the city of St. Charles, the 1st capitol of Missouri. Hosts from St. Louis will also be available to entertain any guests that are not attending the workshops.

All of our choruses should support these programs so that we can keep our musical leadership and lay leadership well informed.

National Music Committee members should plan on staying through Sunday, June 26 to finalize the music for the 2013 Sängerfest in Milwaukee.
